Dada Filmmaking
Join the Gay Filmmakers on Tuesday, September 18th
from 6 to 7:30 pm for Dada Filmmaking. Dada--the principal of art based on deliberate irratioinality, anarchy, cynicism and negation of laws of beauty and social organization. We'll shoot an improv based on your suggestions to improv actors. Then we'll edit the footage using FinalCut Express. No experience required but experienced teachers welcome. Contact George Bistransin at VillagePlaywrights@gmail.com or 718-381-1487 if you can help with equipment (we need a shotgun mic and lights,) acting or refreshments. The meeting will be at the LGBT Community Center, 208 W. 13th St., NYC. Check at the front desk for the room number. The Village Playwrights is a great opportunity for all screenwriters to have their scripts read to a small audience who can offer feedback in the development of your script. Emanuel Gavales, a member of the GFC (gay filmmaker’s club), who also co-runs the Village Playwrights, has offered the opportunity of a time slot for a reading on March 14th, and Dominic Ambrose has expressed an interest in the spot. Screenwriters can take advantage of this as Emanuel has so graciously offered the members future time slots that may be open. Plus this helps members hear the script prior to deciding to work on it. Contact Emanuel from the Village Playwrights. PREVIOUS MEETING: Tues. August 21, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Film sound expert and Academy Award winner
Tomlinson Holman We are honored to have Academy Award winner Tom Holman talk about one of the most important production topics. He will be flying in from California just for our next meeting. Holman currently teaches film sound at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, and his book Sound for Film and Television, now in its third edition, is required reading in many college film courses. In his talk he'll be giving an overview of his book Sound for Digital Video, which is aimed at amateur and independent filmmakers. His talk will be a short course on the whole book, at speed-reading rates but with time for questions. As he puts it, "An audience can forgive imperfect video, but bad audio is simply unacceptable. Audio quality is one of the main differences between a clearly amateur and a professional-level product.". He will show us how to bring high-end production tactics to bear on lower budget productions. While working for Lucasfilm, Holman developed THX, a set of technological innovations assuring top quality sound in commercial cinemas and home theaters. THX was created to reproduce sound as the film director intended it to be heard. Tom celebrates his 30th anniversary with his spouse Fritz Koenig this summer. PREVIOUS MEETING: Tues.
